Mom and Boys

Figuring it out one day at a time.

My problem with stay-at-home moms and the church.

I have issues.  (I am sure Isaac would enthusiastically back me up on that statement).

Why is it that every women’s bible study is mid-week in the middle of the day?

I have moved my fair share and as a result gone to several different churches.

This is always the case.

The older I get and the more desperate I have become to forge friendships with people my own age and a similar station in life, the more frustrated I become.

I would love to be a part of a women’s bible study.

I would love to be in the fellowship of other Christian women.

But the church does not offer this to women like me.

I work.

It has come to my attention that the church assumes two things:

1. All Christian women must not work during the week.

2. All women or men have copious amounts of childcare options unless you are attending a church event mid-week in the middle of the day.  AKA women’s bible studies.

Seriously?  This pisses me off (I know, my language sucks).

The only way you can attend a women’s bible study is to be a stay-at-home mom, retired, or unemployed.

I’m angry, I’m left out, and I am jealous.

Maybe us working moms should just attend the men’s Bible studies that always seem to happen on Saturday mornings.

Oh wait, no childcare (they have women at home to do that for them)….

As I said, I have issues.

  1. I found the same thing. I’m a working mom. The world is centered around late afternoon events that my child and I can never attend. Church, school, park & rec. It doesn’t matter. I finally found a sport and music lessons that I can take my child to after work and on weekends. All of the working mom’s at our school complained about meetings at 3:30 etc etc etc. But it seems unfair that the working women who contribute so much get so little respect from others. Great post. Thank you for sharing.

    • Especially now, with more and more moms having to work you think that this would be taken into consideration! Thanks for you post. This is a such a hot topic for me, I get heated every time I think about it 🙂

  2. It’s not just church activities. I’ve found that unless you’re a stay-at-home mom, there are no mom’s groups available, and certainly no play groups.

  3. That really does suck.

My church has both day time and evening activities. Some are kid friendly (namely, the day time events) and some are not.. So there are at least a few options.

Who knows, maybe you are that voice for other mom’s in the church body that also work and don’t have available daytime hours for the women’s and mom’s groups – maybe you could consider starting up a group yourself? I’m not suggesting that in a way that writes you off how you feel or like it is TOTALLY up to you to do the reaching out. It really would be nice if churches had multiple get-togethers to offer at different times. But then again, as I know is the case with my church, sometimes things don’t crop up until there is a known need for them.

So maybe asking those that head the church if there is something in the works? Just to get the ball rolling on your part. You never know who you could bless by being the one to get the ball rolling. Just a thought. You seem like you are a very honest person (I mean that in a great way!) and maybe someone needs to wake your church up to the needs right there within their own body.

Really hoping that you end up finding something to be a part of or some answers. Take care!

    • You certainly have a good point, and I know there are more productive ways to handle this than whining about it. But sometimes…a girls gotta vent 🙂 Thanks for your post, I really appreciate it!

  4. Hey,
Even though you probably do not live in the vicinity of my church I wanted to stick up for it and say that WE DO offer a MONDAY NIGHT Bible study AS WELL as Tuesday morning. Check for small groups to join in churches too. You can meet together in the homes of other couples/families at your stage of life and fellowship. Do not lump all churches together please and do not get frustrated. There IS a church out there perfect to fit yout needs. Sometimes it is the BIBLE STUDY LEADER who picks the time/day they host the Bible study and most of them are retired or moms. It is not solely the CHURCH that sets the times. I am a Pastors daughter and just wanted to give you a heads up.

    • Thank you for your response. That is wonderful that your church offers an evening bible study, but I think your church is an anomaly. I just know that most churches only have women’s bible studies during the day. It is just something that needs to be taken into consideration. There are many moms who work now days and to only offer things during the day is really limiting the amount of women that can be reached. I love my church, it is awesome and I think they do a great job with most things, but I really do think this is an issue. And it is certainly one that strikes a cord in me. Thanks for stopping by 🙂
